On October 5\u20136, 2026<\/strong>, the Institut de Ci\u00e8ncies del Mar (ICM-CSIC)<\/strong> and the Observatoire Oc\u00e9anologique de Banyuls-sur-Mer (OOB)<\/strong> convened for their 8th biennial meeting<\/strong>, focused on marine microbes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>

During the event, Bernat Ibars<\/strong>, a bachelor’s thesis student at ICM-CSIC under the supervision of Ramiro Logares<\/strong>, presented his research titled:
\n\u00ab Marine microbes on the rise over two decades: potential expansions in the NW Mediterranean?\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

Rising species, but uncertain origins<\/strong><\/h4>\n

While the introduction of non-indigenous species in the Mediterranean is well-documented for fauna and flora, the long-term dynamics of microbial populations remain poorly understood<\/strong>. Indeed, determining whether a microbe is truly non-indigenous is challenging<\/strong>, as its original range is often difficult to define with certainty.<\/p>\n

Using 20 years of data<\/strong> from the Blanes Bay Microbial Observatory (BBMO)<\/strong>, this study aims to identify microorganisms whose abundance is increasing significantly.<\/p>\n
